Puerto Rico, Chile and Mexico open with victories at U19 Pan Am Cup

 

Puerto Rico opened day one at the U19 Boys' Pan American Cup with a straigh-set victory over Jamaica.

Monterrey, Mexico, March 21, 2017 – Puerto Rico, Chile and hosts Mexico started off on the right foot by claiming opening day victories at the U19 Boys’ Pan American Cup, a qualifier that offers three tickets to the age-group 2017 FIVB World Championship on Monday.

All three victories were achieved in straight sets at Nuevo Leon Gymnasium of Monterrey.

Puerto Rico began the day with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-15) win over Jamaica relying on its strong services led by Pedro Molina who scored six aces among his team-leading 16 points. Gabriel Garcia added 14 points in the victory, including three aces, while Jamaica’s Steve Davis led the defeated side with 11 points.

Chile’s win over South American neighbors Peru 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-18) was highlighted by 11 blocks and a 4-0 advantage in points from the service line.

Vicente Mardones had 14 points, including four aces, as the best Chilean scorer followed by Vicente Ibarra and Esteban Mulchi with 10 points apiece. 

Alex Rusch was tops with five blocks in the victory.  Peru’s captain Konrad Linder had 11 points in the losing cause.

In the nightcap, Mexico blanked Costa Rica 12-0 in aces and held a 7-2 margin in blocks en route to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-16) victory in 68 minutes.

Raymond Stephens finished as top scorer for Mexico with 15 points (five aces), while Miguel Sarabia scored 13 (four aces). 

In Tuesday’s matches, Colombia, Dominican Republic and Nicaragua will make their debuts at the intercontinental tournament which offers tickets to the top two NORCECA teams and one ticket to the best qualified South American side.

Colombia meets Jamaica, Dominican Republic challenges Chile while Nicaragua faces Mexico.
