Japan and Iran sweep pool play matches in Boys’ U19 World Championship

 

Japan and Iran are the only undefeated teams after five days of preliminary round competition in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Boys' U19 World Championship

Riffa, Bahrain, August 22, 2017 – Japan and Iran completed a sweep of their pool play matches on the fifth day of competition in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship at the Isa City Sports Hall on Tuesday.

Japan topped Pool B after sweeping all their matches and with a 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-18) win over Brazil. France finished second in Pool B after they defeated Poland 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 40-38). Brazil are in third place with a 2-2 win-record, while Cuba stayed in contention with one win, while winless Poland are in last place.





Iran succeeded in their sweep of Pool D after they defeated Czech Republic 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-19). In the earlier match, Italy improved their win-loss card in Pool D to 3-1 to finish second in pool play, following their 3-1 (25-22, 25-13, 20-25, 25-23) win over China. The Czech Republic, China and Mexico are ranked third, fourth and fifth in Pool D, respectively.





Meanwhile, Egypt took the top pool spot in Pool A with nine points and a 3-1 win-loss record. The African side recovered from their first set loss and pulled off a 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-21) victory against USA. Bahrain continued with their good run and earned their third win in four matches. The hosts defeated Tunisia 3-1 (25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22) to claim second place in the group. USA dropped to third spot, then Puerto Rico finished fourth and Tunisia in last place.





In Pool C, the Russians defeated the Koreans 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 22-25, 25-20) to claim pole position. They will advance to the next round with three wins and one loss. In the other match, Turkey handed Argentina its first loss in the tournament at 3-1 (28-26, 25-22, 21-25, 19-25, 15-11). Korea and Turkey are in third and fourth places in Pool C, while Chile will move classification matches for 17th-20th place.
