Gabriel Garcia sets scoring record for Puerto Rico at Pan Am Cup

Puerto Rico's Gabriel Garcia (1) scored 43 points in the victory over Colombia

Monterrey, Mexico, March 23, 2017 – Hosts Mexico and Chile advanced to semifinal spots at the U19 Boys’ Pan American Cup but the big news on Tuesday was the herculean effort by Gabriel Garcia who amassed 43 points in the five-set victory of Puerto Rico over Colombia.

Garcia became the first ever male player to reach the 40-point plateau in a NORCECA or Pan American volleyball tournament, joining Trinidad & Tobago’s Channon Thompson who recorded 46 points in a loss to Costa Rica at the 2019 NORCECA Girls’ Championship in Guatemala City.

Garcia’s offensive feat helped Puerto Rican squad to overcome their 42 errors en route to the 3-2 (13-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 15-9) victory. Pedro Molina contributed 16 points in the win while Carlos Llanos and Carlos Valderrama topped Colombia with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Puerto Rico finished with a 2-0 record and 8 points in Pool B but as the lowest pool winner based on point-ratio (1.175) will play Costa Rica in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Chile also totaled 8 points but claimed the semifinal berth with a 1.314 balance as winner of Pool A.

Mexicans celebrate victory over Nicaragua to win Pool C.

Mexico swept Nicaragua 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-14) to win Pool C with 10 points from two 3-0 victories. The winners landed 15 aces and outclassed their opponents 7-1 in blocks.

Raymond Stephens led Mexico with 11 points while Axel Tellez and Miguel Sarabia each contributed 10 points in the victory. Nicaragua’s Jonny Zeledon had a match-high 14 points in the loss.

In the other match on Wednesday, Bayron Valdez scored 26 points, including 4 blocks and two aces, to carry the Dominican Republic to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-17) victory over Peru. Konrad Linder had 16 points with two aces and three blocks for the defeated squad.

The Dominican Republic will play Colombia in the other quarterfinal of Thursday while Peru and Nicaragua will play in the eliminatory for the 7-8-9 positions.

Three teams at the end of the tournament (two from North America and one from South America) qualify to the 2017 FIVB Boys' U19 World Championship, 18-27 August in Bahrain.

They join hosts Brahrain plus another four teams from Asia, Egypt and Tunisia from Africa, six teams from Europe, Argentina and Brazil from South America, and Cuba and USA from North & Central America.
