Elsirgany, Elsafy head Egypt’s upset of USA in four-set clash

 

Yousef Hafez Elsirgany scored 19 points to help Egypt in their 3-1 win over USA in the 2017 FIVB Volleybal Boys' U19 World Championship

Riffa, Bahrain, August 22, 2017 – Yousef Hafez Elsirgany and Youssef Hamdy Awad (Elsafy) headed the Egyptian 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-21) defeat of USA in Pool A of the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship at the Isa City Sports Hall on Tuesday.

Elsirgany and Elsafy teamed-up to run the Egyptian offence and scored 19 and 17 points, respectively. Even though USA led all scoring categories and Jaylen Jasper topped all scorers with 23 markers, the NORCECA side committed 34 turnovers compared to Egypt’s 19.

USA opened the match with a win, with Jasper and Joel Schneidmiller in the forefront of their offence. Egypt held their ground and benefitted on two of USA’s turnovers to level the match at 25-23. Elsirgany and Elsafy kept Egypt’s offence running, while USA suffered on more turnovers. The African side focused their attack on the weakness of their opponents until they completed the upset in four sets.
