Chile improve to 2-0 at U19 Pan Am Cup

Chile completed the preliminary round with a 2-0 win-loss record at the U19 Boys' Pan American Cup.

Monterrey, Mexico, March 22, 2017 – It was a day full of emotions at the U19 Boys’ Pan American Cup as two of the three matches held at Nuevo Leon Gymnasium went to the limit of five sets on Tuesday.

Costa Rica and Chile emerged victorious from their five-set affairs against debutants Nicaragua and Dominican Republic, respectively, while Colombia was successful against Jamaica in their first match in the event.

It was the second win in as many outings for Chile to complete their scheduled matches in the three-team Pool A. The pool winners with the best two records advance directly to the semifinal round.

Nicaragua’s Jonny Zeledon had a tournament-high 29 points and teammate Byron Hernandez added 25 but their impressive offensive effort was not enough to prevent the loss to Central American rivals Costa Rica 3-2 (22-25, 28-26, 18-25, 25-17, 15-10).

Jose Andres Ortiz and Pablo Andres Gomez each registered 17 points and Mariano Salas contributed 15 in the victory of Costa Rica who evened its win-loss record at 1-1.

Both teams finished with 11 blocks apiece but Chile bested their opponents 5.2 in aces and benefited from 40 opponent’s errors while committing 32. Bayron Valdez and Frantony Segura were the best Dominicans with 20 and 19 points, respectively.

In the first match of the day, Colombia swept Jamaica 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-12) in just 63 minutes.

Colombia’s Diego Valderrama and Raul Rivas finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Stafon Manning had 9 points for Jamaica.

The preliminary pool-play round concludes on Wednesday with Peru going against Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico facing Colombia and Mexico meeting Nicaragua.

The top three teams at the end of the tournament qualify to the 2017 FIVB Boys' U19 World Championship, 18-27 August in Bahrain.
