In 1987 the Gulf Island state hosted the FIVB Men’s U21 World Championship, a year when Korea topped the podium having beaten Cuba in the final and when the USSR won bronze.
Volleyball was first played in the Kingdom in the 1950’s and the Bahrain Volleyball Association was formed on December 19, 1974 with the late Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Fares Al Khalifa named president.
The BVA joined the Arab Volleyball Organization in 1975 and since 1991 it has been the home of the AVO headquarters. A year later in 1976 the BVA became a member of the FIVB and the Asian Volleyball Confederation.
Since 1995 Bahrain has been the location of the FIVB Middle Eastern Volleyball Development Centre.
