Undefeated Japan and Iran cruise into quarterfinals

 

Riffa, Bahrain, August 24, 2017 – Unbeaten Asian teams Japan and Iran head into the quarterfinals with the Czech Republic, Russia, France, Brazil, Korea and Egypt after recording victories in the Round of 16 of the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship at the Isa City Sports Hall on Thursday.

Japan and Iran kept their strong bid in the Boys’ U19 World Championship going as they kept their win-records clean with five victories. Japan opened the Round of 16 competition with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-21) win over Puerto Rico, then their Asian rivals Iran made it to the top eight after defeating Turkey 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-13).



Korea are the third Asian team that made it to the top eight, after completing their 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-13) triumph over Italy. In other matches, France swept USA 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-20) to join the winner’s circle, together with Brazil, who overpowered hosts Bahrain 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-18).



The Czech Republic had excellent come-from-behind victories in the first two sets to beat Argentina 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 25-21), then European powerhouse Russia utilised their great service game against China to win 3-1 (22-25, 25-12, 25-16, 25-13).

Egypt completed the quarterfinals roster after a great comeback in the last two sets to finish with a 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-10) win over Cuba.



In the playoffs for 17th-20th place, Mexico and Chile finally broke into the win-column with victories over Tunisia and Poland, respectively. Mexico defeated Tunisia in a five-set encounter 3-2 (25-18, 25-21, 18-25, 22-25, 15-11). Chile had a better finish over Poland 3-1 (28-26, 13-25, 25-21, 25-18).
