Gold Medal Match

Iran succeeded in their gold medal hunt as they defeated Russia 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20). Porya Yali, Morteza Sharifi and Amirhossein Esfandiar dominated in offence as they combined for 54 of Iran’s 59 attacks – outscoring Russia’s entire attack output of 46.

Iran found the perfect combination of heavy hitters to take them to the top of the podium. Yali led Iran in scoring, Sharifi was their most efficient hitter, while Esfandiar played consistently across all skill sets.

Bronze Medal Match

Japan completed their campaign with a bronze medal, following a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-18) win over Asian rivals Korea. Japan recovered well from their semifinal loss to Russia on Saturday, to record their seventh win in the tournament.

Kento Miyaura consistently led Japan in scoring and his performance in the bronze medal match was no different as he topped all scorers with 16 points. Mahiro Saeki also had a commendable performance in defence, scoring four of Japan’s 10 blocks.

5th-6th Place

Meanwhile, France claimed fifth spot in the tournament, following their 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 26-24) win over Egypt. France outplayed Egypt with better attacks, blocks and serves that destabilised the latter’s drive in their encounter.

7th-8th Place

The Czech Republic finished in seventh place, following their 3-2 (25-20, 18-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-9) win over Brazil. Marek Sotola led their offence with 21, while Josef Polak took care of net defence as he made 10 of the Czech Republic’s 19 total blocks.

9th-10th Place

Italy recovered from a rough patch in the Round of 16 and claimed three victories in a row, including Sunday’s 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-20) triumph over China. The Italians won a total of six matches in the tournament for a ninth place finish.

11th-12th Place

Turkey concluded their stint with a 3-1 (27-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-18) win over Argentina to clinch 11th place. Turkey captain Adis Lagumdzija delivered another double-digit performance that included 17 attacks, one block and two aces.

13th-14th Place

Bahrain had an impressive performance against Puerto Rico to finish 13th overall. The visiting side looked restless as they committed multiple turnovers, while the host team looked determined and patient in their plays to claim a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-23) win.

15th-16th Place

USA ended their campaign with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 26-24) win over Cuba to finish in 15th place. Both squads were almost equal in attacks, but USA were more driven to earn more points from their net defence and service.
