France pick up first two wins in Boys’ U19 World Championship

 

France made back-to-back wins in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Boys' U19 World Championship

Riffa, Bahrain, August 19, 2017 – France claimed their second straight win after opening day winners Russia, Italy and hosts Bahrain suffered losses on the second day of competition in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship at the Isa City Sports Hall on Saturday.

France showed a very solid performance against Cuba in Pool B with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-14) win. Celestin Cardin top scored for the European squad with 16 points, but top scorer Remi Bassereau also had a great output of 15 points to help their team gain a successful start in the competition.

Argentina, USA and Iran opened their campaigns in the Boys’ U19 World Championship with victories, while defending champions Poland suffered a loss.

Argentina defeated Russia 3-1 (20-25, 25-13, 25-23, 26-24) in Pool C, USA beat hosts Bahrain 3-1 (28-26, 25-19, 20-25, 25-23) in Pool A, and Iran stunned Italy 3-2 (25-16, 23-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12) in Pool D. Brazil stunned Poland 3-1 (22-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-22) in Pool B to bounce back from their shattering loss to France on Friday.

Turkey, Egypt and Czech Republic won their matches to bounce back after encountering defeats on the opening day to Russia, Bahrain and Italy, respectively.

Turkey dominated Chile 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-19) in Pool C and Egypt defeated Puerto Rico 3-1 (29-27, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17) in Pool A, then Czech Republic overwhelmed Mexico 3-0 (28-26, 25-16, 25-17) in Pool D.
